Alexa for Shopping Adds Text Chat: 9 Smart Ways to Use It

Amazon is letting some US shoppers text its Alexa for Shopping AI agent directly, with a wider rollout planned over the coming weeks.

Alexa for Shopping can now be used by text message. Amazon is rolling out a feature that lets some US customers chat with its AI shopping agent from their phone’s messages, without opening the Amazon app or website, according to Tom’s Guide.

It arrives just ahead of the holiday shopping season. Here is how the rollout works, what you can ask and what to keep in mind before you let an AI agent reorder things for you.

How Alexa for Shopping text chat works

Tom’s Guide reports that texting is rolling out to a select number of US customers by invitation. More customers should get access over the coming weeks. If you are chosen, you will see a text message inviting you to try it, and other shoppers can sign up on a landing page to get updates.

Amazon does not appear to be changing what the agent can do so much as where you can reach it. In October, Amazon added more than 100 new actions to Alexa for Shopping, available to all US customers by voice or typing. Those cover lists and registries, Subscribe & Save changes, Prime and other subscription details, delivery instructions and billing questions, according to Amazon.

Nine ways Amazon says you can use Alexa for Shopping by text

Tom’s Guide lists these use cases from Amazon:

  • **Reorder items:** Text “reorder” and a product name. The agent finds it and buys it after you approve.
  • **Personalize your shopping:** Tell it your preferences, such as organic options only, and it remembers them.
  • **Watch prices and deals:** Ask it to alert you when a product drops in price or goes on sale.
  • **Manage lists:** Add items to a grocery list or create a new gift list.
  • **Track orders:** Ask where your package is.
  • **Browse Shop Direct options:** Research items and see products from Amazon’s Shop Direct feature.
  • **Get product launch updates:** Ask to be told when a company releases a new product.
  • **Compare products:** Ask it to compare top-rated items, with reviews and pricing.
  • **Check price history:** Ask whether a current price is actually a good deal.

Other examples include starting a weekly shopping list, finding a birthday gift by a deadline, sharing a photo of a clothing item to find similar options, and restocking pet food after you run out.

Why Amazon wants Alexa for Shopping outside the app

Tom’s Guide’s read is that Amazon wants the agent to live outside its app and site so shoppers stay inside its ecosystem and away from rival AI tools. The outlet pointed to Meta’s Muse as an example of the competition. That is the reviewer’s interpretation, not an Amazon statement.

Putting an assistant inside the most-used app on a phone is a familiar strategy. For Amazon, a text thread is also a simple way to bring back shoppers between orders.

Amazon says the agent can handle everyday chores, not only big purchases. The pitch is convenience: a short text such as a reorder request replaces opening an app, searching and checking out. For households that buy the same groceries and pet supplies every month, that could save a few minutes each time.

There are open questions as well. Amazon has not said how many customers will receive invitations or when everyone will get access, and Tom’s Guide describes the rollout only as coming over the next few weeks. Treat any dates you see elsewhere with caution until Amazon confirms them.

What to watch before you use it

  • **It is invite-only for now.** Do not expect to see it on your phone today.
  • **Check approvals.** Reorders require your approval before a purchase, according to Tom’s Guide.
  • **Review privacy settings.** Personalization means the agent stores your preferences. Look at what it remembers.
  • **Compare prices yourself.** An AI summary is useful, but it is still a summary.
